The Patriots Superbowl win was not the only reason for high spirits on Feb. 8. BWH invited its neighbors to another celebration - one marking its successful Mission Hill Main Streets (MHMS) partnership.
BWH President Gary Gottlieb presented a check for $15,000 to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino in support of MHMS’ work with small businesses to revitalize and preserve Mission Hill. The commitment extends BWH’s role as a MHMS “corporate buddy.” For the last four years, BWH has donated a total of $40,000 for operating support, as well as assistance for community events such as the MHMS picnic and holiday tree lighting. BWH is committing $30,000 over the next two years, and Harvard University is pledging $10,000 through Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health.
Menino congratulated MHMS members for their effective work with institutions such as BWH and said, “BWH shows a real sense of respect for the Mission Hill community – they are real champions of the area and demonstrate their concern for the economic health of the neighborhood. They are an institution that is very open to working with the people who live here,” he said.
Gottlieb applauded the leadership of MHMS members and called the partnership with MHMS a cherished friendship, citing the history of BWH and its predecessor institutions in Mission Hill since the early nineteenth century. “We are very pleased to serve our neighbors as the community hospital to Mission Hill, Roxbury and Dorchester,” he said.
MHMS business owners met with Menino and Gottlieb, as well as state Representative Jeffrey Sanchez, Boston City Councilor Mike Ross and other civic and community leaders.
Boston Main Streets, the brainchild of Mayor Menino, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. With economic development efforts now grown to 19 neighborhood programs, it has become the model for cities across the country.
